People who are new to the game of golf often want to know what a good golf swing is. The obvious answer would be a swing that gets a hole in one – but this is far too generalised and it is sometimes impossible to get a hole I none from teeing off due to the shape of a golf course and the position of the green in relation to the fairway. Instead it is better to think of what contributes to a good golf swing so that you can ensure your swing is as good as it can be, and these are things such as -

Excellent posture of the golfer – this is essential to a good swing as the posture of the golfer creates the foundations of the swing.

The speed of the swing – any good golfer will tell you that one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to think that by swinging the club as fast as you can will create a great deal of force which will make the ball travel further. Trying to do this usually results in a poor swing which often sends the ball in the left hand direction rather than straight ahead.

Concentration – when you are lining up your shot before the swing you should make sure that you have your eyes on the ball and are calm yet fixed on the task in hand. Loss of concentration is a killer if you want to have a good golf swing.

Co-ordination – good co-ordination comes from practising your swing time and time again. Without this you will not naturally swing the club and the movement will feel forced and will not help you to perform well at all. If you want to succeed in golf practise makes perfect so spend as much time on your swing as you can to get it right.

I can’t believe I have missed telling you all about this one very important golf instructional move.
I have skirted all around it for years now, but a real life experience has shown me that even the most often talked about golf swing move can be made to sound very complicated.

I want to un-complicate the ” magic move.” If you want to hit the golf ball with authority and maintain great angles through impact you have to do this one move correctly.

So here it is, it’s the SLOT.

It is the one place that the golf club absolutely must go in order to get a good path and angle of attack on the golf ball. It is what Harvey Penick talked about in his ” Little Red Book “

It’s what Ben Hogan wouldn’t talk about because of the wonderment of his great golf swing. And the pent up secrecy of his magic move. Kinda funny now.

It’s the SLOT.

First, let’s make sure we are 100% in agreement that there is never just one move in a golf swing that solves all the problems. There are a few moves that must be done in order to even think about improvement. This is one of those moves, please do not think that it will cure all. It won’t.

But, it will go a long ways to making sure you make one of the most important moves in the swing. If you can get the club in ” the slot” on your down swing you have an excellent chance of making great contact at impact. And the results will be truly amazing.

So here goes, pay attention. Explaining this is not going to easy. Making the move will be easier.

I was playing a round the other day and found that I just was not hitting the ball with that crisp solid feeling. The ball was not reacting well and I was off target some and it just didn’t feel right. I played like dog crap all day. I couldn’t wait to get to the range.

It took two days before I got to the range to deal with the swing. I often find that if some time goes by I will have not much to do to fix what is broke.

Not the case this time. Same thing. It just did not feel right. And the ball was still not reacting well at all.

I always go back to basics first. Grip, set-up, alignment, angles and so on.

Check, check, check !

Nothing! Now I’m worried. Poor contact lousy balance. Was that a shank? Ooooooh man !

Feelings ? Frustrated, worried, shocked and amazed, mad, confused, getting madder, more frustrated, I tell myself to get over it and get down to business, and I do, but not without still being very angry inside.

Since I feel that my backswing is always the same, I tend to look at the down move first.

I like to take it to the top and then slowly work the club into the various positions that I feel are very important to my ( and your ) golf swing. All the way to impact and then to finish.

SLOW ! And I do not hit a ball. I use it as a reminder as to where the club is supposed to go and where my body parts are supposed to be in concert with the club.

Suddenly, I notice that I could actually see the ” SLOT.”

WOW!

Maybe I need to both see it and feel it.

So I began to work on making sure that the club got into the slot. I used small swings, short backswing, into the slot and hit. I dropped my right elbow straight into the front of my turned right hip bone. Not behind it, rather in front of it, I actually tried to brush my elbow into that bone on the front of my right hip.

This works……….. and it fixed my condition for the moment.

So where is the slot, exactly?

Try this: get in a good set up position. Now draw an imaginary line from the front of the ball, back through the ball to your right ( not for lefties) and for however far you want the line to go.

You should be standing parallel to this line. That is your toes, your knees, your hips, and your chest and shoulders should be parallel to this line.

Can you visualize the line?

If you can, now take note of the relationship of your right hip and the line, and your right shoulder and the line. It is particularly important that you note the distance that now exists from the line to these body points.

Got it?

If you get this, you will note that there is near equal distance from the line to these body parts.

Now turn your right shoulder as if in a backswing, as you do this, your right hip will turn less than your shoulder but turn nevertheless.

Got it?

Now…………. Note the new distance from the line to your right shoulder and you right hip.

This new distance, the area between the line and your right hip and right shoulder while turned into the backswing is ” THE SLOT “

Now, to prove this to yourself, try this.

Take a set up position with a club like an 8 iron. Without bending your arms, pick the club up toward your chest, just use your hands only. Do not bend your arms up not one tiny bit. The club should be at near parallel to the ground.

It does not have to be perfect. But do not bend your arms.

Now turn your shoulders to the right as if in a backswing and let the club go with you. You should turn enough so that the club is still parallel to the ground and now parallel to the line.

Remember the line, right?

The location of the club now in this new position is ” THE SLOT”

The club must go through this exact position on your downswing, every single time from this point forward. Do what ever it takes to make sure it gets there.

Start with small swings, slow and deliberate. Check and double check.

Well, I have a great golf instruction tip for you today. Are you ready? The reason that you struggle when you pitch is because the golf club swings down in the downswing, and just before it gets to the golf ball, it starts to swing back up and you wind up hitting the middle of the golf ball.

When you pitch the golf ball, the goal is to hit down on the ball and to have the ball crawl up the face of the golf club and go onto the green. The only way to make this happen is for the leading edge of the club to hit the bottom of the golf ball. The reason that many golfers skull the ball over the green is because they focus on the follow through being high and as a result, hit the ball on the upswing. In short, they don’t hit down on the ball, but rather hit up on the ball.

Imagine the golfer with the high follow through. As they come down, they start to swing back up again. Can you imagine how high the club face is at follow through? This is the incorrect way to hit a pitch shot. I’ve been in golf instruction for a long time and this is one of the most common problems I see.

The correct way is to put a little extra weight on your left leg, or the front leg, lean over on top of it, and with your arms, swing the club head down and let the golf ball go up. It will crawl right on up the club face. The key is to follow through low to the ground, not high.

In the downswing make sure, with your weight on your left side, that you swing your arms down and get the leading edge to swing into the ground. And then, the golf ball will crawl all the way up the face and take off for the target.

So remember, ball in the middle of your stance, weight on your left leg, swing your arms up and down. We like to keep golf instruction simple.

For better impact and for a little more loft when you’re pitching, get the feeling that you’re swinging the club face down into the ground.

Doing this will help to build up the speed in your golf club head.

Step 3 – Contact

It is important that you make the right kind of contact with the club head on the golf ball. As you begin to drive through with the club it is important that you concentrate on getting more energy into your hips and shoulders but keep your wrist firm and straight as the club makes contact with the ball. It is important that you do not snap your wrist at the bottom of the swing as this will actually decrease the amount of speed that the golf club head contains.

Step 4 – Follow Through

When it comes to building up your golf swing techniques you need to be able to follow through correctly. If you do not then the accuracy of your shot and the power in your swing will be greatly diminished. It is important that your club ends up on the other side of the body to where it started in one smooth fluid movement.

Many say I have a nice looking swing, yet I routinely shoot in the 80s and 90s, sometimes close to a 100. My mind is filled with thoughts about my stance, my grip, my swing plane, my weight shift, my……ARGH!

I used to have a couple basic thoughts when playing golf.

Keep my head level (not completely still, just don’t stand up taller or dip down).

Let my weight transfer to my right leg (I am right handed) but bend that leg and let the tension build and go into the ground, not get on the outside.

Make solid contact. That’s it.

Years after changing my swing I can still revert back to my old technique. It is far from perfect, but produces a solidly struck golf ball and ok scores, without all of the stress.

So the question…….am I going to abandon all of the work over the last 5 years and go back to the old swing? No. But……..I am going to change my thought process. Most people who spend quite a bit of time playing golf know how to swing the club, and nobody knows your swing better than you do.

So my advice….Pick 1 or 2 things to think about when swinging the club. These thoughts don’t even have to be about anything specifically related to the swing, just something to keep you focused on the task at hand……..making good contact with the golf ball.

Don’t fill your mind with too much garbage. You have swung the club thousands of times. Your body knows what to do so let it….AND….when things go bad, just let it go. Don’t forget…golf is a game and meant to be fun.
