Senior Golfers Increase Swing Speed

It is widely known that with increased age comes a decrease in flexibility. This is why so many golf fitness programs emphasize stretching and increasing range of motion for senior golfers. It has also been well documented that senior golfers between the ages of 55 and 79 can increase their drive distance and enhance their overall golf performance by engaging in a safe and effective golf conditioning program.

According to a recent study evaluating swing speed, senior golfers reaped great benefits by engaging in regular core stabilization exercises. Senior golfers participated in an 8 week study where they engaged in a core stabilization program several times weekly utilizing tools such as foam rollers, mats, stability balls, medicine balls and elastic cables. The end result was an increase in club head speed of over 6 mph. In real terms, this can yield an increase in drive distance of over 17 yards.

For those senior golfers who are interested in improving their length off the tee while increasing their level of fitness, try these core stabilization exercises.

Glute Bridge

Goal:

This movement is designed to strengthen the glutes as well as improve their firing rate.

Instruction:

o Lie down on the floor on your back

o Bend your knees and place a ball or folded towel between your

o knees

o Place your hands at your side and lift your toes off the ground with heels remaining

o Engage your abdominals and glutes, then slowly lift your hips off the ground

o Don’t let the glutes touch the ground while you perform repetitions

Ball Bridge

Goal:

This movement is designed to strengthen the low back muscles and glutes.

Instruction:

o Lie down on back with your feet on top of the ball

o Point toes towards your shins

o Pull shoulder blades back and down

o Raise glutes up until you are one line from your shoulders to your feet

o Slowly lower your body until hips almost touch the ground, then repeat the lift

Sitting Leg Lift

Goal:

This movement is designed to activate your hip flexor and thigh muscles while stabilizing your abdominals and spine.

Instruction:

o Sit on a Swiss Ball with your feet shoulder width apart

o Rest your hands on each side of the ball

o Tighten your abdominal muscles and maintain a straight spine

o Begin by lifting one leg at a time a few inches off the floor

o Alternate between each leg in a marching motion

o Try to keep the same spine angle and avoid shifting from side to side

Senior golfers still have what it takes to hit the long ball as long as they continue to compensate for the loses they experience through the aging process. Placing an emphasis on core strength, stabilization and flexibility, will keep senior golfers in the game for years to come.

Golf Swing Training

Top golfers today take time out for flexibility exercises along with their golf swing training. For a golfer it is an investment in their future. Stretching exercises are a key factor to both injury prevention and peak performance. In today’s competitive golf scenario, the golfer with poor fitness levels gets left behind in no time. It’s therefore important for the competitive golfer to stay free of golf related injury, as much as possible.

Golf swing drills and exercises will not only improve your range of motion and flexibility but directly result in a better golf swing. Improved motion and flexibility will easily help your game to reach its full potential. Greater flexibility will allow you to move the club head, generate more club head speed, and as a result the ball will travel a greater distance with less effort. In fact the better your body can turn, the more the power it imparts to your swing.

Today, many professional golfers use rotational exercises to improve their flexibility. This primarily involves loosening the joints and strengthening muscles used in the golf swing drive. Stretching exercises can range from touching your toes to twisting from side to side with a dumbbell. You can also exercise with you club round your shoulders with both arms resting on it. Twists with your arms extended will also give you good results. These exercises improve the rotational muscles and improve the flexibility of the shoulder, back and hip region eventually resulting in a much better golf swing.

In this another golf swing training exercise, you move your hands over the inner circle of the swing. The hands cut a specific arc through the impact zone during the swing. If the arc is consistent, the club head will also describe an arc to meet the ball squarely. Another way to improve the rotational strength is by using swings with a weight in your hands. As we try to drive against a resistance for example using a weight as clubs, we will build up strength in the entire muscle group which comes into play during a perfect golf swing. As there are around 14 groups of muscles which come into play, the best way to exercise them is to swing with a weighted club or a dumbbell. The rotational strength is bound to improve. In fact Golf weight training exercises are the simplest and the quickest ways to better your golf swing.

Coming from someone who has been playing golf for over 40 years, if you are thinking about starting to take up the game start with some tips for beginner golfers. Now there are many things that you can do to improve your golf game or even take away from your game, but speaking from experience, a good swing will usually produce some good results.

Getting the right tips for beginner golfers, is going to make the game much easier. Now whether you are trying to hit a drive off the tee or a fairway iron, having a comfortable and confident swing can help. As mentioned before there are many different aspects to playing golf well. One key is to have good balance. Taking the club head back with good balance and then delivering the club head on the ball on the downswing with good balance will produce a fine golf shot. If you try to hit the ball like you are chopping a piece of firewood is not going to produce any type of result that you want.

When taking a golf swing as a beginner is sometimes a difficult thing to do. Having a smooth transition at the top of the swing with smooth rhythm is going to produce the swing that you want. Having smooth transition will help to deliver the club with good club head speed at impact. There is nothing worse than playing behind a group of beginner golfers, who have never practiced anything, and really have no business on the golf course. They should be spending there time on the range practicing their swing and finding that balance point. Now if they don’t hold anybody up, well then I guess it is ok.
